Learn the notes on the guitar neck by reaction time

Fretboard Trainer is a free practice tool for learning every spot and note name on the guitar fretboard. Each question is timed. Spots you answer slowly or miss come up more often in later sessions, so you fill in your weak areas first.

Four drills

  • Basic: see a string and fret, name the note.
  • Reverse: see a note name, find its fret on the given string.
  • Unison: find every spot of the same note within your range. The answer appears on a small fretboard diagram.
  • Random: all three drills mixed.

How to use it

  1. In Settings, pick the strings and frets to practice. If you are new, start with frets 0–5.
  2. Choose a drill on the left and press Start.
  3. When you know the answer, press Space to reveal it, then → for right or ← for wrong.
  4. Answer 10 or more in one session to keep your daily streak.

Answer with your guitar

Plug your guitar into an audio interface and answer without letting go of the neck. After playing the note, one muted strum means right and two quick ones mean wrong. Sound is analyzed inside your browser only. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.

Records

A practice calendar, response-time trend and fretboard heatmap show at a glance where you are slow.
